This keyer has all of the features of the latest PicoKeyer Plus - and plenty more!  You get four buttons, one for each message for super easy message recording and playback.  A built-in sidetone audio jack lets you plug in your ear buds, headphones, amplified speaker or just pipe the sidetone audio into your homebrew rig's audio section.  I've also done a major overhaul on the setup menu -- you can now set up everything (other than recording messages)  using just the front panel pushbuttons, without even plugging in a paddle!

The new firmware builds on previous versions of the PicoKeyer with a number of new features.  Of course the most obvious is instant access to all four messages with the touch of a dedicated button.  Recording a message is now a lot simpler -- just hold down the button until you hear the prompt.  Just like the buttons on your car stereo, and just like you'd expect them to work.

There's also a completely new setup function.  Use the front panel buttons like arrow keys (they're even marked on the panel) to scroll through menu settings and make changes as needed.  And, if you want to switch between your paddle and straight key -- there's no need to remove the battery!  A quick button press is all it takes.

The Ultra PicoKeyer complete kit contains everything you need to build a stand-alone Morse code memory keyer and code practice oscillator with speed control. You can put it in the nice looking, pre-drilled plastic box (included), build it into your next homebrew rig, or even retrofit it into your favorite commercial rig!  At just a touch over 2" x 2" you can stuff this little circuit board into some pretty tight spots. The latest PicoKeyer chip and all the parts you need are included, along with a high quality double-sided printed circuit board with plated-through holes and silkscreened component outlines. The pushbuttons and speed control are mounted on one end of the board, and the RIG, KEY and PHONES jacks are on the other.

The Ultra PicoKeyer is an advanced, super low power iambic keyer with a long list of standard features. Here are the main features of the PicoKeyer Kit:

  • QSO/serial number can be inserted in a message, auto-incremented and decremented. You can set or reset the QSO number from the setup menu. Counts up to 65536, which should be enough for the biggest contests.
  • Optional leading zeros can be sent for QSO numbers less than 3 digits.
  • Cut numbers can be selected for QSO numbers in stored messages. Zeros, nines, both or neither can be selected.
  • Transmitter QSK delay compensation - Lengthen elements by a preset number of milliseconds to correct for transmitters that tend to shorten dits and dahs in QSK mode.

The PicoKeyer uses FLASH and EEPROM memory to store all settings and message memory, meaning NO backup batteries and NO lost settings.

The Ultra PicoKeyer kit includes the Ultra PicoKeyer chip, a high quality solder masked and silkscreened PCB, and all parts needed to build a complete keyer, AND a custom cabinet drilled and machined to fit the keyer.  Once the simple assembly is finished, the keyer can be mounted in the included enclosure.

High impact foam shock absorber built into base.

The mast is made of Glass Reinforced Plastic (GRP) = Fiberglass. This is an insulator with excellent RF properties (very low loss).

The packed length can be reduced to 58.2 cm by removing the top and bottom caps - useful in some airline carry-on bags. The maximum dimension for an airline carry-on bag (56 x 35 x 22) is 69.5 cm diagonally bottom right to top left.

Friction lock: pull each section firmly with a twisting motion for best lock. When erecting always start with the smallest section. When taking down always start with the largest section.

Mast sections may be removed by unscrewing the endcap at the bottom of the mast, pulling out the shock absorber and removing unwanted sections. Always replace the shock absorber before use.

Powerful simultaneous antenna comparisons with DXplorer Premium

Using a simple computer interface, you program the WSPRlite with your callsign, QTH locator. Once set up, the WSPRlite does not need the computer to operate. Just connect it to a USB power supply (e.g. mobile phone charger), press the "sync" button at the start of any even minute, and off it goes! WSPRlite will make regular transmissions that are automatically received by stations around the world. These stations send their reports to a central website where you can see where your signals are reaching within seconds. Even more fun is to leave your beacon running and monitors its performance using DXplorer on your smartphone or tablet. This is a great way to see how your station is doing when you are at work - or even on holiday!* Take a WSPRlite on your next business trip or cruise and see where it it being heard while you sit at the bar.

What makes our product unique is the ability to compare antennas and location. We use the WSPR data to generate a special metric, DX10. We recalculate your DX10 range (km) every 2 minutes. DX10 is a great system performance indicator! The best HF system will give the longest DX10 ranges. Because you can compare the DX10 ranges for two station in real-time, you can see which one is the best - and by how much. Along with real-time DX10 graphs we calculate a mean and maximum DX10 score for each station - very handy if you make changes to your antennas to see what the changes actually do!

For beam users we generate on-the-fly Great Circle maps that have colour-coded spot locations showing signal to noise ratios. If you are doing a comparison, you can easily see who got the furthest spots and who was strongest!

Hardware

WSPRlite is a self-contained propagation beacon transmitter. Once configured using a special Windows app (third party LINUX and Mac support available at WSPRlite Facebook Group), WSPRlite only needs a USB power supply to operate (no need to tie up your computer). WSPRlite operates on 630-160-80-40-30-20m. The unit contains filters for 30 m and 20 m operation. Operation on other bands requires band-specific lowpass filters. We can supply a kit with filters for 160-80-40m . WSPRlite has accurate digital power control over a 16 dB range to facilitate precise measurements of antenna performance differences. WSPRlite is a low power device at only 200 mW but because of the clever encoding of the WSPR signal it has the DX capability of a 1 KW SSB transmitter (80 W CW).

Software

The DXplorer website is designed to operate with WSPRlite. DXplorer provides you with antenna performance information and propagation information in a new easy-to-use format. DXplorer has been optimised for use on mobile devices. Each WSPRlite comes with a free 1 year subscription to DXplorer Premium worth £19.95 - allowing access to additional facilities including detailed antenna comparisons.

Low pass filters for 40m, 80m and 160m (all three supplied). The lowpass filter kit builds up to a neat pcb (73 x 97 mm)  with low pass filters for 7 MHz, 3.7 MHz and 1.8 MHz. The filters are selectable with movable jumpers. The kit is supplied with a prewired coax tail with SMA plug to connect directly to your WSPRlite and a board-mounted SMA socket for connecting your antenna: no fiddly connectors to install!

The PCB has been designed with new builders in mind. High quality through-hole components have been used throughout including Grade 1 Murata/TDK C0G/NP0 capacitors, Grade 1 solderable enamelled copper wire and gold plated jumpers.

Interference Avoidance Algorithm

WSPR continues to increase in popularity. Because of this, the chance of co-channel interference has risen. The WSPRlite Flexi's Interference Avoidance Algorithm uses statistical data on the frequency distribution of WSPR transmitters to helps it to pick frequencies that are more likely to be clear. Other improvements in the Flexi means that it uses a much higher proportion of the available WSPR spectrum - again helping to reduce the chances of interference to and from other WSPR users.

User defined transmit frequency

A powerful feature of all WSPRlites is their ability to run synchronised with other WSPRlites. By analysing synchronous data the measurement performance is vastly improved compared to other comparison methods as all the data is from simultaneous transmissions. To facilitate synchronous use, Flexi users can manually enter the frequency that they wish to use for each unit. This facility is only available with the Flexi.

Increased Maximum Run-time**

WSPRlite Flexis are all soak tested in our factory to pre-age the TXCOs. They are then individually adjusted against a Rubidium standard. With these more accurate oscillators we have been able to increase the run time to 45 days. This facility is only available with the Flexi.

Low Pass Filters

The WSPRlite Flexi has no internal filtering and thus you will need to add filtering before use. There are several filter options here at the FUNKBOX shop. One is the two band filter kit which is sold as a bare board allowing you to implement your own filters.

Low pass filter for 6m, 10m, 15m, 20m, 40m and 80m.
(all six filters are included for self-winding)

The kit is based on a solid board (50 x 95 mm) with low-pass filters for 50 Mhz, 28 MHz, 21 MHz, 14 MHz, 7 MHz, 3.7 Mhz. The filters can be selected with a rotary switch.
Using the SMA sockets you can connect it directly to your antenna, the QRP transceiver or the WSPRlite family.

Two Band Low-pass Filter Kit with Bypass

An easy-to-build two-band filter low-pass kit with optional enclosure. Switching at input and output for improved isolation.

Information for self-designers

The filter board has been designed to accommodate a standard 7 element low-pass filter. The design size for the toroids is T50 but T68 will also fit (not in enclosure). The capacitor footprint is for a 5 mm lead spacing. For good performance (low loss and good attenuation) C0G or NP0 dielectric capacitors should be used (silver mica or polystrene are also good). For flexibility there are footprints for two capacitors in parallel and there are also footprints for capacitors to be placed in parallel with the inductors to allow more complex filter designs to be implemented.

Plated-through holes with cleared roller-tinned copper have been placed along the sides of board. There are also five cleared pads on the ground-plane that can be used for sprung earth contacts if required.

Dimensions 120 x 55 mm. Board includes 4 x 3 mm mounting holes.

Yaesu FT-817 / FT-818 - Power Pole Adapter

The FT-817 is a great radio but it does have a few weakness. A common problem that users encounter is the failure of the DC input connector on the rear panel. In use any stresses and strains from the power lead tend to make the DC power socket in the radio shear off the printed circuit board causing intermittent operation which usually leads to total failure. The socket is a surface mount item and thus is hard to replace - and even if replaced, it is likely to fail again.

This neat adapter, from Jon N0WL, screws to the rear of the FT-817/818 and removes any strain from the connector. It is fitted with PowerPole connectors (of course). We supply it with a ready-made lead with a PowerPole connector already fitted. Lead length approx. 1 m = 3 ft. Fitting time for the adapter, about 3 minutes (and that's only if you take time finding your screwdriver). An easy upgrade that will save you money in the long run.

This adaptor is suitable for all models of the FT-817 and also fits the FT-818.
